Diet and Its Effects on Tooth Erosion
Presented by: Lisa B. Stefanou, RDH
The propensity for dental erosion , tooth wear, caries and hypersensitivity can be reduced through nutrition and dietary changes. Dental Hygienists are in an optimal position that allows for communication regarding a patients food habits. With a better understanding of lifestyle and diet choices the RDH can educate the patient to reduce opportunities for erosive wear and to prevent the clinical manifestations and promote a healthy lifestyle.
Clinical Patient Management of the Elderly and Aging
Presented by: Gregory J. Folse, DDS
For vulnerable aging, special needs, and medically compromised older patients the hygienist’s role can be critical not only to oral health, but to life itself. From tears of joy to lock-jawed frustration, treating the vulnerable can be both blessed and challenging. This clinically based lecture reviews oral health/systemic health links and details when, where, and how to treat these vulnerable patients as well as gives practical instruction on meeting their dental, medical, and psychological needs through implementation of unique hygienist focused access models. Additionally, patient approach and treatment, the controversial topic of disease maintenance, and the current state of national governmental neglect of our most vulnerable citizens will be discussed. The personal, professional, and spiritual gratification received from treating these populations will be emphasized throughout the lecture.
